About Amarapura

Founded by King Bodawpaya in 1783 as his new capital. Amarapura is a former capital of Myanmar during the Konbaung Dynasty, and King Mindon built Mandalay in 1857 and shifted the capital from Amarapura in 1860. Amarapura is now a township of Mandalay city. Amarapura is bounded by the Irrawaddy river in the west, Chanmyathazi Township in the north, and the ancient capital site of Ava in the south.
