It is the 10th Myanmar month in the middle of the cool season (December-January).
In ancient times, it was the month for the equestrian festival held for virtually the whole month, as it involved competitions in horsemanship, bowmanship, lancing and sword fighting, shooting and martial arts.
It was in effect an occasion to select heroes.
It was found to have begun in 674 ME under the reign of Pinya Thihathu but researchers in Bodaw Paya’s reign held that it began in the reign of King Nyaungyan in Inn-wa Period.

The Naga, one of the over one hundred and fifty different ethnic tribes in Myanmar, lives in the remote area of Northwest Myanmar, Naga celebrates New Year for five days, during the time, they dance, perform, beat their drums, hold the tribal customs until midnight.
Not easily accessible due to rough terrain and a lack of modern infrastructure, the tribes of the Naga national group live in the far northwest near the Indian border. Every January they celebrate their New Year at a festival that brings various Naga tribes together to feast and dance. For the comfort of outside visitors, the festival site has western toilets and electric lights, as well as catered food, which is transported to the festival site to avoid straining the local resources.
There is no stronger demonstration of the diversity of culture than when one sees how many different Naga groups with different costumes, traditions and languages come together in one place.
